Moving the collections
RAMM's building on Queen Street closed its doors to the public in December 2007. But before any major redevelopment work could start the city's collection had to be moved out for safekeeping.
Between November 2007 and May 2008 RAMM's Collection Relocation Team undertook the enormous task of packing up and moving 1.5 million objects. These included items that were on display in the galleries as well as objects from the stores.
Although nearly all of the collection was moved to the Ark, some items - including Gerald the Giraffe, the elephant and rhino - were packed and stored on site awaiting their exciting future.
