Kim McGauley, Museum Assistant
When I was young, my favourite was the shrunken head. Now, it’s the Buddha.
What I do …..
I am front of house, which means I help with the day to day running of the public side of the museum. Things like setting up events, as we hire out our galleries. Checking on our other buildings, we have 5 in total. Fire safety checks. I am also a Fire Warden. Also helping the visitors and answering any questions they may have.
How I ended up at RAMM …..
I started work here as a casual, just a couple of days a week. Then something strange happened. I started to look forward to coming to work, which had never happened before. So I took the plunge, handed in my notice to Tesco, where I’d worked for 13 years and started here full time. I just have a few more responsibilities now that I am no longer a casual.
Best part of my job …..
I do really love everything about my job. I always seem to be learning something. If I had a choice though, of what to do, it would be to go to St Nicholas Priory as much as I can. It really is in my mind Exeter’s hidden jewel. It’s located behind The Mint pub. It was built 900 years ago and was Exeter’s first medieval monastery. Then later became a Tudor home of a wealthy merchant family. That’s how it is now presented, with beautifully crafted replica furniture. It is open throughout the summer starting at Easter every Saturday and children’s school holidays. I just love working there.
