Exploring Turner’s landscape with Kurt Jackson
8 November 2016
Follow in the footsteps of J. M. W. Turner, one of Britain’s greatest landscape artists, and Kurt Jackson, contemporary British artist, and see the Southwest through their eyes.
A new, free iPhone app will take the adventurous to the exact locations visited by Kurt Jackson when retracing Turner’s travels over 200 years ago. It superimposes Turner’s engravings and Jackson’s paintings on the current scene, allowing direct comparison between their views and current landscapes.
J. M. W. Turner’s view
Turner was commissioned to make sketches for a topographical publication. He visited the Southwest three times in the 1810s sketching scenes in pencil. Watercolours were derived from the sketches. Engravings derived from the watercolours were then published.
Kurt Jackson’s view
Kurt Jackson recently revisited 12 locations drawn by Turner. His reinterpretations of Turner’s views are on display at RAMM in the exhibition Kurt Jackson: Revisiting Turner’s Tourism (10 Sept to 4 December). They are also featured in the app and can be superimposed on the contemporary views.
About the app
The 61.2 MB app requires iOS 6.0 or later. Downloadable from the App Store, it is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
