Home Sweet Home

If you have made a new home in Exeter, we would like to hear from you!

RAMM invites you to come and share your thoughts, memories and stories around a theme that unites us all: the home. Share a universally warm welcome into the variety of homes that make up Exeter. Show us an object you bring out when people step into your home, and help us tell its story.

People and objects moving to Exeter

People around the country and across the world welcome guests in all sorts of ways, from Yorkshire tea to Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, from an Australian barbecue to the Omani nose kiss. Celebrating Exeter’s diversity, the museum is planning a photographic display of customs and objects used by residents from around the country and across the globe who have made Exeter their home sweet home.

People come to live in Exeter for all sorts of reasons. Some retire here to be near family, others move to work or study. Some leave family behind to make a new start.

This project, Home Sweet Home, will result in a display in the Café at RAMM between 28 May and 23 June 2019. The aim is to celebrate the diverse cultures and backgrounds of people living in Exeter, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, from France to the Philippines.

We’d like to record and share the story of the object or custom you use in your home. The display will feature images of whatever you bring; it could be a special coffee pot, a much-loved recipe, a pair of slippers, a favourite brand of tea. We are interested in what you have to say about them.

Everyone is welcome, but we would especially like to hear from Exeter residents with links to other parts of the world.

Bringing people together to talk and share

Dates/times:

Thursday 21st March, 10.30am – 1pm. A museum tour, tea/coffee and cake, and an introduction to the project. This is a chance to come behind the scenes to see and touch museum objects, and chat about how you greet and welcome people.

Thursday 28th March or 4th April – from 10.00am (1 hour). A short interview with each person to talk about where you come from and the object you have brought from home.  We will take photographs. We can just photograph your hands if you do not want your face to appear.

You will be invited to a celebration in June to see the Café display and thank you for getting involved.

It’s free to take part and you don’t need to speak or write in good English.

Tea/coffee and snacks will be provided. We can help with the cost of travel to the museum.
