The Exeter Carnival is back and looking to be better than ever! Read on to find out about RAMM’s free Carnival celebrations
The vibrant event began its journey in 1977 and was held annually until its 20-year-run concluded in 1998. Once billed as Devon’s biggest Annual Street Party with over 130 entries including illuminated floats, masqueraders on foot, bands, majorettes plus special entries, this year’s event is guided by original Carnival Committee member Arthur Dyke, whose years of expertise will add an extra dose of dazzle to the streets. Coinciding with the Christmas lights, inExeter are bringing the carnival’s creativity and community spirit back to Exeter and celebrate all it has to offer.
We’ll be joining in the fun by contributing a slice of Exeter to the parade in the form of a roman soldier, alongside our very own fabulous human butterfly.
Get the party started early at RAMM! On the 26 November between 13.30 and 16.30, set the mood on the afternoon of the carnival with music, storytelling, dance, games and crafts at the museum.
Devon Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the region’s largest and finest ensembles, will provide a beautiful classical backdrop for the musically inclined. Meanwhile the one and only globetrotting storyteller Clive PiG will take your family on a zootastic animal themed adventure. Clive has sung songs on TV in New York City, shared stories in Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, recited poetry at Number 10 Downing Street, and now he’s here! The ensemble will be completed by performers from Exeter College who will help you to embrace your inner beast and guide you through the steps to unleash your wild side in a dance inspired by the movements of animals.
You’ll be able to make animal masks and headdresses ready for the festivities later on in the day (£3.50 fee). Whether you get your signature look from one of the animals in the museum or represent your favourite furry friend, show off your design skills and love for carnival with a wild and wacky creation! No booking required, just turn up.
