Double Elephant Print Workshop – Redefining Print
6 October 2015 to 17 January 2016
This exhibition forms part of a two-year funded project with Double Elephant Print Workshop, which explores ideas around a redefinition of printmaking.
In 2014 five contemporary artists were commissioned to make new work in response to printmaking. These five were new to print and they brought with them experience in making art in the fields of performance, film, digital media and sculpture. They were selected because their practices were far removed from the traditions of printmaking. They spent time in the Double Elephant workshop and as a result made new work which will be shown at Exeter Phoenix and will form the backdrop to discussions during the symposium on Thursday 19 November.
In addition, these five artists, joined by ten member printmakers from Double Elephant, have made two limited edition portfolios of original printmaking which will be on display.
The portfolio prints illustrate the wide range of processes available to printmakers today including traditional techniques such as linocut, alongside photo etching and other photographic processes. They also show a breadth of approaches to the medium, from landscape and nature study to images influenced by performance and electron microscopy.
One aim of the project has been to see how artists unfamiliar with printmaking are able to use the technique to express their ideas and to encourage them to see print as one of the many means of making contemporary art. Another aim is to encourage fine art print collecting; the limited edition has become an affordable and very desirable way of collecting contemporary art and we anticipate that these portfolios will be much sought after across the UK.
The five commissioned artists are: Katy Connor, Bryony Gillard, Mark Leahy, Volkhardt Müller and Clare Thornton.
The ten Double Elephant members artists are: Lynn Bailey, Virginia Bridge, Catherine Cartwright, Chow Cheung, Jess Davies, Clare Harper, Richard Hodgson, Cathy King, Alison Savic and Martin Staniforth.
Exeter’s Double Elephant Print Workshop is a community studio for artist printmakers, offering courses and facilities in fine art printmaking and outreach to schools, hospitals and beyond.
The work in this exhibition will be for sale. There will be a limited edition boxed collection which will include ten prints made by selected members of the workshop together with prints made by our commissioned artists. There will also be individual prints available for sale in the Garden Reception.
