Stepping Out in Style
4 April 2014
RAMM is sending a pair of its fanciest shoes to a very fancy party…
They will feature in the special Glorious Georges displays at Hampton Court marking the 300th anniversary of the Georgian dynasty which began with the accession of the first of the Hanoverian Kings, George I, in August 1714.
The displays will be shown in Baroque splendour in rooms once occupied by the Georgian court. They include a stunning redisplay of the Queen’s State and Private Apartments showing what life was like for Georgian courtiers. There will also be a Georgian garden party featuring historically appropriate food, music and costumes at Hampton Court on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July. Glorious Georges exhibitions will also take place at Kew Palace and Kensington Palace.
The shoes date from the first half of the 1700s and would have adorned the feet of a well-dressed woman stepping out for a formal occasion. Few good examples of shoes of this date survive. Made from silk brocade over kid leather, the shoes are trimmed with silk braid in a rich golden yellow shade.
The Glorious Georges Season opens at Hampton Court Palace on Thursday 17 April.
