SW collections go global
5 November 2014
Launched last Friday, South West Collections Explorer currently features objects from the collections at RAMM and the Museum of Somerset. Objects from museums throughout Devon will follow.
The site includes user feedback from the public beta version announced last June and allows visitors to search across the collections, browse across groups of objects and select individual objects they are interested in. In each collection visitors can comment on the objects, make their own selections and share their favourites with friends using Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
Compatibility with Culture Grid, the Collections Trust’s online database, and Europeana, the multi-lingual European database, ensures that South West collections take their place alongside other great collections both nationally and internationally. Being economical and replicable the system is easily adopted by other museums and museum groups.
South West Collections Explorer was launched at the Working smarter, rather than harder: Getting Digital to Deliver, a South West Showcase conference held at RAMM for museum and collections professionals, creatives, academics and media as part of Reach SW, an Arts Council England funded collaboration between RAMM and Plymouth Museums to foster excellence in the region. An account of the day is available on Storify.
