The Secret Life of Plants
30 August 2011
The Secret Life of Plants is an artwork by Danish glass artist Steffen Dam. It was the first piece artwork to arrive at RAMM and will be displayed at the More in Store view point.
Decaying bulbs and fungi
The artwork has delicate, hand-blown objects encased within a glass panel. The objects were inspired by half-decaying bulbs and fungi and the piece draws together contemporary craft and natural science encouraging us to look at RAMM’s natural sciences collection in a fresh light. Gallery owner, Joanna Bird, delivered the artwork along with Steffan’s concept work.
The piece was purchased for RAMM through Art Fund Collect 2011 in April. ArtFund Collect is a joint scheme run by the Art Fund and the Crafts Council. It aims to champion contemporary craft by challenging curators to acquire significant works of applied and decorative art by artists from around the world at Collect, the annual fair organised by the Crafts Council. Exhibitions Officer, Penny Sexton, and Curator of Natural History, Holly Morgenroth, represented RAMM at the fair.
More in Store
More in Store is a working museum store which is open for visitors to view by appointment. Designed with this in mind, collection storage is organised to allow visitors to get up close to some of RAMM’s best objects and specimens. The viewpoint allows all visitors to see inside.
With views through one end of More in Store, the viewpoint allows visitors to promote their favourite objects to the window area. It also features a wall for displaying comments and drawings.
