Past Contemporary Art 2012-16
RAMM has a strong history of developing innovative contemporary art programmes and commissioning creative work.
Designed into RAMM are installations by three contemporary artists – Nicky Hirst, Maria Lalic and Michelle McKinney. Throughout 2012, hundreds of thousands of visitors experienced ‘Ghostwriter’, a digital artwork by award-winning Blast Theory.
During 2014/16 RAMM worked with five artists on a series of creative interventions called ‘Artists’ Reflections’. These were responses to RAMM’s heritage and the collections of antiquities, art, natural sciences and world cultures.
The first of these reflections was by Polly Morgan and was inspired by the natural sciences collections. The piece ‘You Are Here’ was first displayed from August 2014 – March 2015. RAMM has since worked with Mark Anstee (‘RAMMYRIORAMA’, Jan 2015 – Jan 2016), Sonia Boyce MBE RA and Serena Korda (‘Oskar’, July 2015 – June 2016) and Rod Dickinson (‘Outlier Detection’ Jan 2016 – Jan 2017).
All the artists participated in the ‘Creative Collaborations – contemporary artists and cultural heritage’ conference in November 2016 which was attended by colleagues from museums, galleries, arts and heritage organisations.
New Expressions 3
This national programme ran between spring and summer 2015. Up to 20 artists presented specially commissioned work in partnership with 15 museums across the South West, Midlands and North of England. Taking museum collections as their starting point, projects ranged from long-term interventions to one-off performances.
As RAMM’s contribution to New Expressions 3, Chris Watson worked with us. Chris is a BAFTA award winner and one of the world’s leading recorders of wildlife and natural phenomena. New Expressions is a programme to unlock the creative potential of museums by partnering them with artists. RAMM was a founder of this programme and worked with Blast Theory in New Expressions 2. Additional funding came from Arts Council England as part of our Major Partner Museum creative digital work.
