Digging Exeter

Dig into Exeter’s story like you’ve never done before . . . literally!

Dust off those knee pads, polish those trowels, and whip out the old fedora (if you want to fully embrace the cliché) and become an archaeologist for a while!

Join us in the Princesshay Shopping Centre as we delve into the past of our city. Brush up those excavation skills in one of our giant dig pits, built specially for this event. Each pit is littered with artefacts just waiting for you to unearth them.

From pot sherds and statues, to dinner plates, turkey bones and leather boots, everything that archaeologists have dug up over the years helps piece together the mosaic of Exeter’s history (they’ve even found one or two mosaics too!).

It may look like a modern city, but just beneath your feet there are stories just waiting to be told, from the earth-shattering dramas of Roman Isca Dumnoniorum, Viking invasions and Civil War sieges, to the everyday lives of shepherds driving their flock to market, Tudor traders selling their wares, and Victorian nobles hosting dinner parties.

Along with our excavation pits, we’ll have handling tables to investigate, puzzles to unravel, info on objects in RAMM’s collection, and professional archaeologists to chat to about the remarkable discoveries constantly adding to Exeter’s story.

So come along, grab a trowel, and dig in!
