Large-scale hangings around the Cafe at RAMM evoke the smells of baking, sounds of cooking, tastes of holiday treats, the delight of childhood picnics, and a reverence for unused teacups.
Local artist-illustrator Hannah Mumby has woven extracts of conversations with Exeter residents into a series of wall panels that explore memories and customs around food.
The feelings and flavours emerged as responses to food-related artefacts, from Roman olive oil containers and an ancient cauldron to silver chocolate pots and Devon harvest jugs.
People in Alphington, Beacon Heath, Countess Wear, Newtown, Summerway, St Thomas, Whipton and Wonford talked during craft activities, summer festivals, lunch clubs and museum visits.
Resourceful communities and ethical entrepreneurs found ways to reduce waste and loneliness, and share skills, meals, memories, gardens and seasonal celebrations.
Many thanks to partners at the Beacon Centre, Exeter City Council social housing team, Exeter Respect festival, Hikmat multicultural support group, LoveFoodCIC community food hub and St Thomas Library.
Tastes Like Home is funded by Arts Council England.
