Collaborating with a team of creative practitioners and academics, Pope\u2019s fascinating project explores the complex ecology and cultures of cider-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Here&#039;s to Thee | 2021\/22 Arts Commission\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_AyH-FEipcI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Photographer Robert Darch and filmmaker Bevis Bowden captured the second Halstow wassail in January 2022. Their images and film show the ancient rituals carried out to ensure a good harvest of apples in the coming year. This includes the performance of a new wassail song written by Jim Causley and performed by shanty singing group Mariners Away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon Pope describes the&nbsp;<em>Here\u2019s to Thee<\/em>&nbsp;commission as a \u2018multi-disciplinary and participatory art project that experiments with our relationships with the many non-humans \u2013 especially the microbial life \u2013 involved in cider-making, and explores the ways in which our social worlds are formed in relation to them.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/rammuseum.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Simon_Pope_A_C_image__1_-600x480-1.jpg\" alt=\"Colour photograph of three white men at a wassail.
