‘This is RAMM at its best – a much-loved institution drawing inspiration from a much-loved landscape’

Dartmoor campaign donor

Starting this autumn RAMM will be exploring Dartmoor – a landscape so many of us feel deeply connected to.

Will you support the Dartmoor campaign? With your gift, we can help more people be inspired by this special place.

From September 2024 to March 2025, RAMM is planning on hosting a programme of Dartmoor themed activity. The programme will share creative responses and topical issues about this local landscape.

Donate now

Fundraising for the Dartmoor Inspired Programme has finished now, but you can still support RAMM’s other work by making a donation here.

With your support RAMM will:

An ancient rocky formation that looks like a body and a head, known as Bowerman's Nose stands proud just off centre left of a photo of the Manaton landscape. Fields can be seen in the distance and the sky is cloudy.

Put on an exhibition

Planned for October 2024 until February 2025, RAMM will host an art exhibition called ‘Dartmoor: A Radical Landscape’.

The exhibition will showcase work by contemporary artists working in photography, text, and moving image. Many of the artists consider Dartmoor as both a richly evocative landscape and microcosm of the issues facing our wider society today such as climate change and biodiversity loss. Objects from RAMM’s own collection will form part of the exhibition.

RAMM will be showing stunning works by Susan Derges, Richard Long and Garry Fabian Miller. The exhibition will also showcase two new commissions by Devon-based artists Alex Hartley and Ashish Ghadiali. Exhibition ticket income will raise vital income for the museum service.

RAMM has earmarked funds to go towards this exhibition, but vital support is still needed to fund some elements.

Your vital support could help with:

  • Framing artworks by Dartmoor-based photographic artists
  • Transportation of artworks and specialist technical and installation costs, enabling RAMM to display engaging and inspiring artworks for local audiences

Work with young people who need support with mental health challenges

We can all get so much from engaging with creativity and nature. Young people can have especially profound experiences.

RAMM is fundraising for a project which will support young people aged 12 – 18 many of whom have referrals for mental health support. The participants will use photography to engage with the nature and landscape of Dartmoor, led by a photographic artist based on Dartmoor. The young people will create art which will go on display for over five months in a special exhibition in the Café at RAMM. They will share their creativity with friends and family at a celebratory event at RAMM.

Some funding has already been earmarked for this project and we will be approaching a number of grant funders, but local support will make all the difference!

Your important support could help with:

  • Transport costs to get the young people to photo walks on Dartmoor
  • Printing and display costs for the exhibition made up entirely of their artwork
  • This will ensure that young people get to experience an important local landscape, increase their confidence, and gain pride in seeing their artwork celebrated in their museum

Acquire a work by

a renowned local Dartmoor-based artist

Garry Fabian Miller is a fine art photographer who has lived and created art on Dartmoor for the last 34 years.

Miller’s practice spans four decades and he is known for creating extraordinary photographic prints, without a camera. His work is held in many collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

RAMM has the opportunity to acquire Miller’s ‘The Darkroom’s Fading Presence’ for the collection here in Exeter. The work was created in 2020, the same year Miller closed his Dark Room after 50 years, necessitated by its toxicity and the end of his chosen materials. As the artist’s local museum, it seems particularly poignant that this magnificent late work should be cared for and displayed here.

The work will be on display in Devon for the first time in RAMM’s ‘Dartmoor: a radical landscape’ exhibition.

RAMM is applying to grant funders to support this purchase, but competition is fierce!

Awards will only be made if RAMM can secure local support.

Your crucial support could help with:

  • Purchasing the artwork of a renowned local artist for the Exeter collection
  • Providing the local donations needed to unlock funding from other grant givers
