Creative Commons Information
RAMM uses Creative Commons (CC) licences for a number of its outputs. Creative Commons licences provide an easy way to manage the copyright terms that attach automatically to all creative material under copyright. CC licences are operative only when applied to material in which a copyright exists, and even then only when a particular use would otherwise not be permitted by copyright.
CC licences are standard and interoperable, which means material published by different creators using the same type of CC licence can be translated, modified, compiled, and remixed without legal barriers depending on the particular licence applied. Creative Commons licences are also machine-readable, allowing CC-licensed works to be easily discovered via search engines such as Google. These features maximise distribution, reuse, and impact of published works.
CC licences allow that material to be shared and reused under terms that are flexible and legally sound. Creative Commons offers a core suite of six copyright licences. RAMM uses CC-BY as its default Creative Commons licence for written content. This licence requires that users provide attribution (BY) to the creator when the material is used and shared. The other five licences combine BY with one or more of three additional licence elements: NonCommercial (NC), which prohibits commercial use of the material; NoDerivatives (ND), which prohibits the sharing of adaptations of the material; and ShareAlike (SA), which requires adaptations of the material be released under the same licence. To check which licence has been applied please visit the bottom of the page. Alternatively, if this information is missing please contact us.
RAMM’s Collection and Creative Commons
Images of artworks in RAMM’s collections that are in copyright (the artist is alive or has been dead for less than 70 years) are reused for editorial purposes and the copyright remains with the respective owners. You may download the contents of this website on a temporary basis for your own enjoyment, but any form of reproduction of the contents is not allowed (with the exception of the material on our News & Media pages which is intended for use by media outlets only).
Images of 2D artworks that are in the public domain (the artist died more than 70 years ago) can be reproduced for public enjoyment and copies may be downloaded from Collections Explorer and Wikimedia Commons. Images on Collections Explorer that are either Public Domain or openly licensed and are available for sharing and reuse. Full details are available in RAMM’s Open Access Strategy. RAMM has also released these images under the CC0 public domain dedication. When CC0 is applied to a work, copyright no longer applies to the work in most jurisdictions around the world. Metadata published alongside RAMM’s digital images has also been released CC0.
Images of 3D works where the creator died more than 70 years ago are licensed under the CC BY-NC Creative Commons Licence meaning the user must provide attribution (BY) to the creator when the material is used and shared and it cannot be used for commercial use (NC).
Written work created by RAMM staff is published under a CC BY-SA licence which means that users must provide attribution (BY) to RAMM when the material is used and shared and which requires adaptations of the material be released under the same licence (SA).
