Dartmoor Frame of Mind Project

The last few years have shown us how important getting out into nature is for our physical and mental health, but for young people such experiences can be transformational. RAMM’s upcoming project Dartmoor Frame of Mind will provide 12 – 18 year olds who are struggling with their mental health the opportunity to engage with creativity and the natural world. They will learn digital photography skills from a professional photographer before immersing themselves in the flora and fauna of Dartmoor to try out their new skills.

New digital photography skills

The project collaborates with photographer Jo Bradford, of Green Island Studios, a Dartmoor local and expert in smartphone photography. Under Jo’s guidance, the young people will learn photography tips in online sessions during February and March, before joining the group for an in person photo-walk adventure on Dartmoor led by Jo later in the spring. This is a brilliant opportunity to learn new digital skills and tips from a professional photographer without expensive equipment; all the participants need is a smartphone or tablet.

Supportive group of young people

The group will offer a relaxed and supportive space for the young people to connect, learn new skills, be inquisitive, and provide a safe space to explore their creativity and the natural world.

We hope that the project will encourage them to see their surroundings in a new way, explore feelings and finding time to pause. It won’t replace therapy, but aims to motivate and inspire young people, help them connect to others and improve their mental health and wellbeing through creativity.”

Café display

The young peoples creative work will go on display in the Café at RAMM where their photos can be celebrated and enjoyed by friends, family and thousands of visitors. The café display will complement the upcoming art exhibition at RAMM called ‘Dartmoor: A Radial Landscape’ which will be on display from October 2024 to March 2025. The selected artists have explored creating art on and about Dartmoor using photography, moving image, text and land art.

Funding

The Dartmoor Frame of Mind project is jointly being hosted by RAMM, Youth Arts & Health Trust and Green Island Studios. Funded by Exeter City Council, Arts Council England, Elmgrant Trust and Norman Family Charity Trust.

Youth Arts & Health Trust

Youth Arts Health Trust is an Exeter based charity working alongside young people and their families, to develop confidence and resilience through safe, inclusive and creative arts therapies. Arts therapy is a type of psychotherapy that utilises creativity, as well as talking, to achieve psychological healing and positive change.

“We are delighted to be working with the RAMM again on this really exciting project.  Workshops will be supported by an Arts Therapist from our team and are open to all young people, especially those who may be experiencing anxiety or depression.  It’s a great opportunity to learn new skills and be creative.”Laura Blatherwick at YAHT
