RAMM is worth over £5m a year to Exeter economy

Data from the organisation South West Museum Development (SW Museums) shows just how important the museum is to the Exeter, pulling in more than 200,000 visitors a year (based on the survey’s findings for 2022/23).

The SW Museums Annual Museum Survey 2023 findings highlight that visitors to RAMM brought in over £5 million to the local economy across 2022-23. This impact is based on an estimated £4,197,258 from day visitors and a further £942,545 from local visitors.

However, as the economic impact values which underpin this economic benefit are based on 2019 values, and do not include the value of ‘overnight stays’, the SW Museums team state that we can be confident that the true positive economic impact on the city is considerably higher. Museums, cultural heritage, events and festivals continue to provide key drivers for visitors to enjoy, and be inspired by, all there is on offer at destination cities such as Exeter.

“RAMM is a much-loved institution that is ingrained into the fabric of the city and also attracts national attention in the Arts sector, which in turn generates tourism and trade for Exeter.

Generations of Exeter citizens continue to enjoy RAMM as a place of interest, learning leisure and cultural history, as well as taking part in the more recent RAMM Lates and specific interactive activities. In addition, people come to see us from all over the world… This important data really evidences how cultural engagement and provision in a city plays a huge part in supporting the local economy.”
