‘The Living Wonford’ series by Michelle Sank

A portrait series of ten photographs by internationally-acclaimed Exeter-based photographer Michelle Sank celebrates the diversity of the historical Wonford neighbourhood of Exeter.

During summer of 2021 Michelle Sank spent time with families and individuals who live in the Wonford area of Exeter.  The resulting photographs are being displayed on a screen in Gallery 20, alongside Breathe, another photographic series taken during the first lockdown in 2020. The Living Wonford series shows people in their homes, contrasting with the photographs in Breathe, which are all outside.

Many of the people Michelle has captured in the series have family ties that go back years, being born to parents who themselves lived here. They are now making their own lives within this close-knit community alongside those who have settled here from other parts of the world. What is so apparent is how many residents are inter-connected with each other in some way and how the constant mutual support is so evident and embraced.

See The Living Wonford portrait series on display alongside Breathe in Gallery 20 until the 21 November.
