Portrait photography

This display shows some examples of portrait photography from RAMM’s collections, alongside a mid-19th century studio camera used by Exeter photographer Owen Angel.

Today we are used to having the ability to take a photo at our fingertips, but for the majority of Victorians having their photograph taken was a serious and costly undertaking, often involving a trip to a professional photographer’s studio wearing their best clothes.

Through the viewpoint windows you can explore some of the poses and props used by photographers in the past and see how portrait photography has evolved over the years.
