Tavistock’s Heritage – visit for members of Friends of RAMM

Tavistock is Devon’s only World Heritage Town.  Our mid-summer visit is in the expert hands of Dr Geri Parlby, Chair of Tavistock Heritage Trust and Accredited Arts Society Lecturer.

We start with a one hour guided tour through the recently restored Guildhall, the country’s oldest combined police station and courtroom and now a World Heritage Interpretation Centre.

After lunch (12.15pm to 1.15pm; not included in ticket), a walk with a Tavistock Heritage Trust guide gives a gentle overview of the colourful history and heritage of the 1,000-year-old town. The predominantly flat walk of approximately one mile takes us on a journey through ten centuries, revealing abbey and churches, mineral mining and the Industrial Revolution, the building of the canal and railways and the influence of the Dukes of Bedford.

After the walk, we relax with a traditional cream tea at The Bedford Hotel and learn from Geri how Tavistock became the birthplace of this most delicious of afternoon treats.

When booking, please provide a contact email or phone number to receive the detailed programme.
