Winter's Edge - a festive musical extravaganza

A musical journey through the museum exploring winter with music from Schubert’s Winterreise, seasonal songs and quartet music by Debussy, Mendelssohn and Caroline Shaw.

Join the Haldon String Quartet and performer Freddie Crowley, previously a chorister at Exeter Cathedral and choral scholar graduate of Merton College, Oxford, as they perform within the surroundings of the museum.

With a drink and canapes on arrival, you will move around the galleries throughout the evening listening to each of the performances taking place.

‌‌Haldon String Quartert

We are four musicians rooted in Devon, South West England, united in our desire to play the classics of the string quartet repertoire and newer works to audiences in the area and further afield.

Our diverse backgrounds and musical interests nourish our collective approach and achieving a common goal is part of the process. We enjoy working together and spending time together, listening, weighing our voices, and trying to find and convey the heart of the music.

The members of our quartet have played for BBC Philharmonic orchestra, Welsh National Opera, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Philharmonia and various chamber ensembles.

Violins – Lindsay Braga and Andrew Gillett

Viola – Fiona Dalgleish

Freddie Crowley

Freddie Crowley is a freelance musician whose career encompasses ensemble and solo singing, choral conducting, composing, arranging and teaching. Growing up on Dartmoor in rural Devon, he spent six years as a chorister at Exeter Cathedral.

As an ensemble singer, Freddie has performed with choirs including The Sixteen, London Voices, The Carice Singers, Philharmonia Voices, Oxford Bach Soloists and Echo. He is an alumnus of young artist schemes including Genesis Sixteen, the NYCGB Fellowship programme and the Voces Academy Musical Leadership Programme, and was chosen to be a Making Music Selected Artist for the 2020-21 season.

Freddie is the Founder and Director both of Corvus Consort — described as “one of the most innovative and adventurous vocal ensembles presently performing” in the wake of their debut album release on Chandos Records in 2022 — and of the Whiddon Autumn Festival, an annual festival of vocal and chamber music on Dartmoor which saw its third edition in September this year.

As an educator, Freddie frequently delivers singing workshops in primary and secondary schools around the country, often working as part of the Learning and Engagement teams of The Sixteen and the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain.

Freddie graduated in 2018 from Merton College, Oxford, where he read Music as a choral scholar. While at university, he also sang as a member of jazz a cappella group The Oxford Gargoyles, and made frequent musical theatre appearances.

For a while he worked as a barista at Monmouth Coffee Company, and can be found in the depths of Dartmoor when he has the chance.

This concert has been made possible through the support of the Exeter & District Classical Music Trust.
